Bon Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras!
As you can probably guess today is Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday). There's no carnival here like in New Orleans, my family made crêpes to celebrate! Stumbled upon another Coca-Cola ad for Mardi Gras.
Il est temps de rire! = "It's time to laugh!"
Also, I'm not sure if this is the intention or not but "de rire"could be highlighted because it pronounced similar to the word,"derrière" which means butt in french; which would explain the polar bear on the far right....however, that could just be me.... :)
This past weekend was pretty relaxed. On Saturday I went to my friend's, Lea, house. When I was there she introduced me to crustless bread. Maybe, I've been living under a rock my whole life but I have never seen a loaf of crustless bread. Of course, I remember Crustables from my Eisenhower Elementary school days...But a loaf of white crustless bread?!? That's probably has as much nutrition as a post-it note. Anyway, so we had Nutella on some slices of crustless bread.
Despite its negative nutritional value, it was delicious :)
Lea pondering how crustless bread is made
Sunday was a rainy Sunday. With no motivation to do anything I watched the film, Breakfast Club. I had never seen the movie before. It was pretty good. In the afternoon I had an interview with a college over Skype. Now, I am officially done with anything to do with colleges! I also spent some of my Sunday looking through my family's collection of children's books. I read some folktales because I wanted to see the difference between American and French folk tales. I didn't find anything particularly life altering. My favorite was "Blanche Neige et les sept nains" (Snow White and the seven dwarfs). I love the names of the seven dwarfs in French!

Dormeur: Sleepy
Grincheux: Grumpy
Joyeux: Happy
Prof: Doc
Timide: Bashful
Simplet: Dopey
I wanted to have more practice reading french because last week my Economics teacher asked me if I could read a text out loud for the class. I was nervous because there a lot of words that I had never seen in my life, but it ended up being fine. Even though it was a trivial experience, it made me realize that I haven't had a lot of practice reading French out loud. Which means, yes, that I spent my Sunday reading french children's books out loud to myself. You gotta do what you gotta do. ;)
Yesterday, I helped some of my friends to prepare for their oral exams in our European history class which is in English. Although they have been learning English longer than people at Hopkins (they start in 1st grade here compared to 7th grade in the states). I am so impressed with their level in English.  For the oral exam, they need to talk about a subject for 10 minutes nonstop. In another language, that's not easy! Here, everyone is required to take English and another foreign language of choice. It's a shame that we start a second language so much later and that it's not even required in the first place.
Today, in French history we started learning about the Middle East. I realized that I have learned absolutely nothing about the history of the Middle East. Not only that, but I also have no understanding of the geography of the region at all. In gym, we had our final for the BAC for Badminton! Everyone was super serious (which I understand because their note is very important). However, I couldn't help but think how funny the seriousness of it all. One match was evaluated in front of the professor. After that the match, the professors asked questions about your strategy versus your opponent's strategy. I did not realize that we were going to quizzed on player strategy and hadn't been paying too much attention what Manon, my opponent, was doing or even what I was doing. Oops! However, it ended up going pretty well. I won 2 of the sets! After school, I took a little nap. When I woke up I realized that I only had ten minutes before I had to do my oral exam for European history. I had to hurry, but I ended up returning to Lycée on time. (The subject was globalization and the iPhone incase you were curious...which I doubt. :) It went fine and I was able to return to my house for the second time. Finally for dinner, I made crêpes with Marine and Louis. This time we added light beer to the crêpe batter to make them lighter. You can't taste it and nearly all of the alcohol goes away when you cook the crêpe. So my tip of the day: When making crêpes add some light beer!
C'est tout.
